Beach Volleyball: The beach offers several volleyball areas towards the middle of the promenade that are free to use. Gather some friends and enjoy a fun, competitive game of volleyball which is a great way to keep fit while enjoying the seaside atmosphere. Despite being a bit off the beaten path, Yellowcraigs Beach in East Lothian is worth the visit for those looking to escape the city. It’s less than a miles’ walk from the train station to the beach. On the way you’ll pass the town harbour where you may spot some Arbroath Smokies over the smoking barrel – the town is famous for these local delicacies and featured in the winning fish dish on BBC2’s Great British Menu, 2021. If you are seeking refreshment, there is a choice of several bars and cafés on the promenade, with further options on Portobello’s bustling high street, including quality independent restaurants and gift shops. There is a market in Brighton Park on the first Saturday of every month, selling fresh local produce as well as crafts. Silverknowes and Cramond beaches lie 4(ish) miles northwest of the city centre where they overlook the Firth of Forth and the coastline of Fife.

Getting here, and keeping going

Discover wonderful wildlife tours to book and experience in Scotland, including bird watching safaris, whale watching, farm tours and much more! The Portobello Kayaking and Sailing Club is based here, along with RowPorty, a community-run coastal rowing club. Look out also for the splendid Victorian swimming pool, featuring an original Aerotone and Turkish baths. Portobello Beach, known locally as ‘Edinburgh’s seaside’, boasts a stunning 2-mile stretch of golden sand which is perfect for relaxing with a picnic, sunbathing, or enjoying water sports.

In addition to its natural beauty, Musselburgh Beach is also close to several notable attractions such as the historic Musselburgh Racecourse which has been hosting horse races since 1816, and the Brunton Theatre which offers a range of contemporary and classic shows.

This picturesque village is best known for its exceptional golf courses (the Muirfield course is a regular host of the Open Championship) but it’s more popular for the fabulous golden sand beach that runs along its northern edge. Continuing east takes us to the next beach on this list – Longniddry Bents. This bay is really just a continuation of Seton Sands but it has its own separate car park complete with public toilets and a semi-permanent food van in addition to the nearby village of Longniddry which offers a range of amenities including shops, cafes, and pubs. Standing out from the rest of the rooms, the family kitchen looks to be a very standard design and layout. If bellies start rumbling you can pop into Direlton Village and Amalfi’s Ice Cream Parlour (a real hidden gem), or the nearby Archerfield Walled Garden which has a large cafe that serves delicious locally-sourced produce. Need to hire a car to explore Edinburgh’s beaches? Out About Scotland recommends Travel Supermarket.

Cramond is the most westerly beach and is best known for the causeway that links Cramond village to Cramond Island, a small islet sitting just over half a mile offshore. The island is definitely worth a visit as it has a couple of small beaches as well as the remains of WWII lookout posts and fabulous views of the Forth Bridges. As already mentioned, Portobello becomes very crowded in the summer months so if you’re looking for a quiet place to relax in the sun you might prefer heading west a couple of miles to Musselburgh Beach instead. If you’re on a budget, follow Bath Street which runs to Portobello high street (0.2 miles away) where you’ll find a Greggs and a Bayne’s bakery on either side of the road. Tourist Information Up the coast from Dundee you’ll find the popular seaside town of Arbroath. It’s a popular place for people looking for a holiday in Scotland with gorgeous views, a great beach and plenty to keep the whole family entertained. Edinburgh has countless beautiful beaches on its doorstep, and whether its views across the Forth you're after or the rugged beauty of East Lothian, you don't have to look far to find the perfect spot to whittle away those long sunny days. Here are the best beaches in Edinburgh right now.
