About this deal

Preparing the surface is of vital importance to enhance the adhesion and life of the coating. All surfaces must be thoroughly dry and clean as well as sound and stable. Metal surfaces should be wire brushed to remove rust and for long-term protection, a rust-inhibitive product such as zinc phosphate or red lead should be used. Blistered or loose paint as well as tar-based paint systems should be eliminated. New galvanised surfaces should be treated with a proprietary etch primer or roughened with a wire brush.

Wood is prone to expansion and contraction in a way that is not replicated in masonry, it is flexible. Manufacturers will take into account the natural characteristics of the substrate when formulating coatings for a specific purpose. This is especially true in the choice of binder and the modifications which may be made to it. It is not wise to use bituminous paints on general painted surfaces. If applied over existing paint the solvent may soften the paint beneath. If subsequently painted over with an ordinary oil paint then it will bleed through. Curing (hardening) time is up to 3 weeks in normal conditions. Treat gently until curing is complete. Protect skin and eyes and apply in well ventilated areas outdoors, do not inhale. Do not apply near open flames, sparks, heat or hot surfaces. sources. Dispose of any waste responsibly as it is toxic to wildlife. Do not swallow. We have a small canopy to a building that has two 200x200x6.3thk SHS steel columns bolted to concrete foundations circa 500mm below ground level. I have looked at several makes of bitumen paint, and there are several which include wood in their list of uses, so it does seem that you can apply bitumen paint to wood in accordance with given instructions.

Reseal tin after use. Clean up any spills immediately with water. Wash brushes in warm, soapy water. Prepare the surface well by removing dust, oil, grease, old coatings and surface contaminants. A primer is not usually needed with bitumen paint but occasionally for additional protection of bare metal surfaces, prime with Zinc Rich Primer or Metal Primer. Use fast dry etching primer for non-ferrous metals. It’s frequently used on metal guttering, fire escapes, stairways, ladders, railings and fences. In the marine sector, bitumen paints are commonly used on boat hulls.Always ensure you have enough paint for your whole project. When more than 1 tin of the same colour is needed, it is good practice to ensure batch numbers are identical or to intermix batches prior to commencing painting. Bitumen paint can be applied to most types of wood and engineered board such as sterling board and OSB board. However, some OSB has a wax finish which the bitumen paint may struggle to adhere to. If you can remove the wax, all the better, if not, try a test patch first. Natural bitumen has been used, tried and tested for thousands of years and is known for its waterproofing and adhesive qualities. Natural bitumen is found in deposits such as oil sands and pitch lakes, while refined bitumen is obtained as a residue from the distillation of crude oil. Carbosil Bitumen Aluminium is for over-coating bitumen-based surfaces. It helps protect surfaces from heat/UV light damage, with a decorative coating and will enhance the lifespan of bitumen-type roofing materials. The flexible, heat resistant and solar reflective surface has outstanding weather resistance and durability. Ideal for use on roof structures, storage tanks, silos, mobile homes and caravan roofs. Reflects heat in the summer and insulates in the winter.

Usually cheaper than many other coatings offering similar weather proofing performance, it’s an economical option Also suitable for interior wood, concrete and most laminate floors with correct application – please note that maintenance may be required in these situations.I have just installed a plastic membrane roof and sealed the joints with heat gun . I have painted over the heat sealed joints with bitumen paint for added protection . Best results are obtained in warm (minimum 10°C), dry conditions and we recommend application of 2 coats. Use Conventional or HVLP spray, brush or roller. Our bitumen paint products Ensure surface is in suitable condition for painting and free from grease, wax or penetrating substances. If previously painted, remove loose or flaking paint. Porous, or ‘thirsty’ surfaces like bare wood or MDF, tend to absorb paint meaning additional coats are likely to be required to achieve a durable finish. In this case, your 750ml tin will provide less than 6m 2 of full coverage. If you apply the paint too thinly, durability may be affected.

Felt adhesive such as Carbobond, is a solvent based mixture of bitumen, fillers and fibres, formulated for bonding felt (as the name suggests), so it is better to apply this first then the roofing felt which will (of course) adhere to it. Bitumen paint can then be applied on top of the roofing felt for extra protection and/or aesthetics. Will bitumen paint cure a leaking concrete roof? I’m hoping for some advice regarding the additional protection of galvanized steel below ground level.I consider this approach to painting to be similar to that of recommending PVA as a primer coat for an emulsion paint system. You may be storing up future problems. Ready to use, this Everbuild paint should not be thinned and can be applied by spray or brush. A minimum of two layers should be added to the surface. The first coating should be left to dry before applying the second which typically takes two to four hours depending on weather conditions. Bitumen paint is usually long lasting. If applied to a porous surface like masonry it will last longer than when applied to less porous surfaces, especially those subjected to long hours of extremely hot sun. Bituminous paints are generally used as an aid in waterproofing and to resist corrosion in iron and steel.
